Goodrich's Shop-Rite in Trowbridge Plaze in East Lansing.
Another recommendation by regular commenter Corky. Since we were already at Hobie’s (review HERE), we took a few minutes to walk over the Goodrich’s Shop-Rite to check the place out. Corky and a few other people have told me they carry Zingerman’s bread so that’s what we went looking for.
Goodrich’s Shop-Rite is in the Trowbridge Plaza near MSU’s campus. When we walked in, my first impression is that it wasn’t going to be much different than any other grocery store. We walked quickly through a lot of the GM section looking for the bakery and deli section. On the way, we made a quick run through the meat department. The thing I noticed here is that they put signs up letting you know where all their meat came from. I’ve been noticing that a lot more lately.
We finally made our way to the deli and what a surprise. I was a little unimpressed up until that point. Once we turned the corner, my impression changed. The deli/bakery section is rather large. There are racks of bread throughout the area. I didn’t find any Zingerman’s so I didn’t buy anything, but there was a lot of different fresh baked bread. The deli case was also huge. Lots of different meats and cheeses.
J was drawn to the fresh muffins they had sitting out, but in the end, she passed on muffins and got some bulk candy instead. As we were heading to the check out, I kept getting sidetracked. Apparenlty, they just started stocking Dellalo Specialy Products and the canned tomatos caught my attention. They even had the tomato paste in a tube that I’ve been looking for. The only other place I’ve seen that is Fresh Market (review HERE) in Grand Rapids.
Sometime when I have more time, I really need to look around Goodrich’s Shop-Rite. J noticed they carry Spartan products and we were finding a lot of stuff we didn’t normally see. They had pretty good deals on olive oil and meat, but nothing I needed at this time. We’ll be back. It won’t be a weekly trip, but when we need those things we can’t always find at Meijer, we now have an option.

The East Lansing Food Co-op carries Zingerman’s bread as well as some local produce, meat and dairy products. You might want to check them out.
The country of origin stuff you saw on the meat is a new requirement across the country- my mom says she had to take a few classes for her grocery store to learn about it- they now have to have signs up and and be able to tell shoppers where everything comes from.
If she reads this post- maybe she’ll have more insight… or could explain it better….
The country of origin labeling or COOL as it’s called became law on Sept. 30th 2008. The 2008 Farm Bill says all beef, lamb, pork, fish, produce some nuts & ginseng must be labeled with COO info. Some exceptions include any food processed like bacon or roasted peanuts, breaded or marinated meats or fish. Also too any mixed items like frozen peas & carrots or mixed lettuce in one bag. At store level we have to check our bills of lading COO info against what the box or PLU label shows. Bills must be kept for 1 year and we could be fined up to $10,000. by The Dept. of Agriculture if rules are not followed. We have until early next year to comply fully
