What’s my favorite thing about going to Ann Arbor?  It’s not Zingerman’s.  It’s not Blimpie Burger.  It’s the Circle K.  I made my to Ann Arbor through a snowstorm for work.  I left pretty early because I didn’t know just how bad the roads would be.  When I got to town, I made a quick stop at Zingerman’s Next Door to pick up some caramel’s for J.  I still had about a half hour before my call time when I got to Crisler Arena and I remembered that there was a Circle K about half a mile down the road, so I headed out back on to the unplowed streets of Ann Arbor.

The Circle K is on Stadium Boulevard not too far from The Big House and Crisler Arena.  It’s not the newest gas station in town, but they had what I needed.   A Polar Pop.  I’ve blogged a few times in the past about the Polar Pop, but I’ll remind you again, it’s more nostalgia than anything.  Yes.  It’s just a Pepsi out of a fountain in a styrofoam cup, but, unlike other gas stations, they charge less than a buck.  Actually, they only charge $.63.  Read the rest of this entry »

I don’t know what it is about Polar Pops that I crave, but fortunately, there’s a Circle K on the way from J’s parents to the Interstate back to Michigan.  After almost a week in Chicago, it was time to pack my truck back up and head north….but not before a stop at the Circle K.

If you read this blog, you know I’ve blogged in the past about there not being a Circle K in Lansing.  I don’t know why I have an affinity for the Polar Pop.  It’s not like the Pepsi that comes out of their machine is any different than the Pepsi that comes out of the machine at the Speedway down on the corner.  I think it has more to do with my daily routine when I Iived in Peoria.

At least once during the day, I would stop at one of the many Circle K’s in the area to grab a pop.  Some days it was more than once.  On days when I had to be to work at 3 AM, I always stopped.  Some people need coffee.  I need Pepsi…at least I did then.  The point is, I need caffeine. “Strange Things Are Afoot at the Circle K”

30 06 2008

My favorite line from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (the only good movie Keanu Reeves has ever done).  The only strange thing right now is that there isn’t one in Lansing!  My girlfriend just called me on her way Circle Khome from Kalamazoo and rubbed it in my face that she was stopping at a Circle K.  This may sound silly because it is just a gas station, but that, so far, is the thing I miss the most about Peoria.  It’s not like their gas is any cheaper or their hot dogs haven’t been in the little roller thing longer.  The thing I miss are the Polar Pops!  32 oz. of sugary goodness for $.75.  Oh sure, you can argue, who needs that much Pepsi…especially when I would stop at the Circle K twice a day or more, but I’m craving it right now.  The cheap styrofoam cups, the crushed ice, and being able to pull three quarters out of my pocket and get a pop.  I almost got out of my truck and did a victory dance when I accidently found a Circle K in Ann Arbor near the Big House.  That was an exciting day.   We used to have Polar Pop runs at my last place of employment.  It’s actually pretty sad.  My boss was on a first name basis and almost to the point of friends with the clerk at the Circle K in East Peoria, IL he went in there so much.  I got to know the overnight guy when I would go to work at 3 am and needed that caffeine fix.  I don’t know how something so simple can seem so important, but I really, really, really want a Polar Pop.  Circle K….come to Lansing!
