They’ve traced the strain of E. Coli at least partially meat bought at Kroger.
The state agency has confirmed 15 E. coli cases of the same genetic strain in Michigan; 10 of those patients are hospitalized.
More than half of the Michigan patients report purchasing and consuming ground beef from Kroger Food Stores. Additional retailers and outlets may be identified.

On-line petitions are worthless. They are succeptable to fraud. If you want to be taken seriously, paper petitions are still the only way to get any kind of respect. The Michigan United Conservation Club has posted an on-line petition encouraging the expansion of Michgan’s Bottle Bill to include bottled water and juice. While I agree with the position, I hate on-line petitions. I have five e-mail address that I still have access to, so I can sign this petition five times…all under different names and some of them not even real names. The goal of their campaign is 1000 signatures. So far, they have 89, but the petition was just posted today, so with little media expsosure they’ve got a good start. Read the rest of this entry »
MIRS News is reporting that Houe Majority Floor Leader Steve Tobocman (D-Detroit) may call the total ban (HB 4163) that the Senate passed for a vote if the Senate doesn’t act on the bill the House sent back to them.
Tobocman said he will wait to “see if the Senate goes along with the exemptions,” but if it does not, House Democrats are prepared to adopt the Sen. Ray Basham (D-Taylor) bill that imposes an across-the-board smoking ban on every public place.
There is no timeframe given. It sounds like they’re hoping the threat of passing the total ban will get the Senate to move on the ban with exemptions. Sounds to me like he’s calling the Senate’s bluff.

The Michigan United Conservation Clubs said Tuesday that within a few years, sales of non-carbonated drinks will exceed soft drink sales.
Michigan’s bottle deposit law, passed by voters in 1976, imposes a dime deposit on soft drink, beer, malt beverage and wine cooler containers.
People return 97 percent of containers for which they pay a deposit. But they recycle only 20 percent of bottled water containers because no deposit is required. Read the rest of this entry »
According to the FDA, Michigan tomatoes are NOT the source of the salmonella outbreak.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has determined that the state’s tomatoes aren’t associated with the recent outbreak of salmonella.
Michigan Department of Agriculture Director Don Koivisto said Friday the state has about 500 open-field tomato farms and 15 hydroponic or greenhouse tomato operations that focus on local distribution.

LANSING – Legislation to better regulate and control bottle returns was introduced today in the Senate, announced Sens. Ron Jelinek and Cameron S. Brown, both border district lawmakers and lead sponsors of the measures.
The five-bill package is designed to prevent bottles and cans not purchased in Michigan from being returned in state. The containers are returned, sometimes by the truckload, by individuals and organized smuggling rings that make large profits off Michigan businesses. These illegal operations cost the state $13 million a year.
MIRS is reporting today that the smoking ban bill is probably on hold until winter.
That’s because the Senate Majority Leader said today that the next move on the legislation is up to the House.
Senate Leader Mike Bishop (R-Rochester)said he has other fish to fry before he gets to the ban, adding, “I don’t know if we’re going to do much before the end of the year on this.” Read the rest of this entry »

Taking my girlfriend out for pizza on a Saturday night….I know. That’s classy. We were sitting around watching TV and both of us were hungry. I didn’t want burgers anymore and neither of us wanted to get dressed up for a fancy night out, so I suggested pizza. I kept reading that Deluca’s has won “Best Pizza….” many times, so we gave it a shot.
Not being really familiar with Lansing yet, Deluca’s took a little while to find. GPS is seriously the best invention of the last ten years. We weaved through the neighborhoods until we got back to Willow St. I’m not sure what I was expecting, but Deluca’s is not what I was expecting. It’s a really nice building located on the edge of a neighborhood. The parking lot looked packed, so we got kind of nervous about getting a table. We parked behind the building and walked back around front. There’s a little waiting room when you walked in filled with autographs of mostly local celebrities who have eaten there. After that, there’s a big counter for take out and a hostess station. Our fears of not getting a table were unwarranted. The place is huge. The hostess took us back past the bar to a booth along the wall. There’s a couple different rooms with booths and tables as well as a nice big bar. Read the rest of this entry »
