Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe in downtown DeWitt.

Since moving to Lansing, I’ve been looking for an excuse to take a trip to DeWitt so we could check out Sweetie-licious.  Finally, I stopped looking for an excuse and just made my own.  We found a place to eat lunch and then planned on heading to Sweetie-licious for dessert.  After a quick lunch at Relli’s, we made the one block trip to with the hopes of sampling the best pie in the country.

Sweetie-licious Bakery Cafe is on Bridge Street in downtown DeWitt.  It’s a colorful storefront  with a few red tables outside.  The store itself is tiny and pretty popular.  We showed up about 1:00 on a Saturday and we had to weave our way around other people.

There are two pastry cases that take up a bulk of the public space.  In the remaining space, there are a few tables.  They do have a savory menu that consists of sandwiches and salads, but we were in the market for sweets.

I’m not a pie person, so I started looking in the cases to see what they had.  There wasn’t a whole lot left, but there were some cookies and brownies that both looked good to me.  I was just going to let J order and then throw in a cookie or two.

After a few minutes, one of the girls working asked J if she was ready to order.  J had been looking over a list of pie flavors that hung on a wooden sign from the counter.  When she thought she made up her mind, she ordered a slice of pie.  The girl taking orders stopped her short.  There were no slices left.  In fact, there were no pies left.  A bakery, world famous for their pies, had no pies.

That sort of put a wrinkle in our trip.  J didn’t know what to order at that point.  She had her heart set on pie, but she recovered quickly and started ordering cookies.  I’m not very adventurous and just wanted a couple chocolate chip cookies.   J picked a couple of the more unique ones.  She got a Choc-O-Bomb, an Iced Molasses, and a Peanut Butter Blossom.  I threw in two cookies and we made our way around the counter to pay.  The five cookies cost a little over nine bucks, but they were rather large cookies.

Since we just ate and cookies don’t need to be eaten right away, we hopped back in the car and headed back towards Lansing.  The whole pie store not having pies was pretty disappointing.  Especially since we made a special trip there.  If you want a pie, you better get there early.  We overheard someone say Saturday’s are nuts.   On the bright side, J has had a pie from Sweetie-licious in the past and loved it.  They were at the Capitol lawn farmer’s market last year and J got one there…..so once she found out we were going to DeWitt for lunch, she was excited about pie.

The cookies were delicious.  They were soft and chewy.  They were perfect cookies, so the trip wasn’t a total waste.  We still got some delicious fresh baked cookies, but for a national award winning pastry shop, I was hoping to have something a little more complex than a cookie.  I guess it’s our fault for going after lunch and not before breakfast.

If you can get your hands on something from Sweetie-licious, take it and keep it for yourself.  Everything we’ve had from the place is delicious…it’s just disappointing when a pie place doesn’t have pies.

Something my Father taught me years ago, if you find a great bakery, get there before ten in the morning or the best items are gone. Even now, some 45 years later, I guess this is still true!

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to
go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but
I had to tell someone!
