We’ve been a little bad so far this year.  J and I haven’t really taken advantage of the countless number of Farmer’s Markets in the area.  I work most weekends now, so the time we have together in the morning is usually spent searching out new restaurants. 

Last year, we trekked downtown for both Select Michigan Capitol Lawn Farmer’s Market’s and when I saw some Twitter activity about the event yesterday, I asked J to set the alarm clock so we could get up and go to the Capitol.

When the alarm went off, we both had a hard time moving.  It was morning, but it was still so dark.  We finally did roll out of bed and got moving. 

We made it downtown just before noon and found a parking spot about a block away.  I grabbed the reusable shopping bag out of the back and we started working our way around the sidewalk in front of the Capitol.  The first thing I noticed is that there was a lot more packaged products this year.  There were multiple stands selling honey, BBQ sauces, jams, and spice rubs.  There were also a lot of potted plants.  Read the rest of this entry »

Yay.  It’s that time of year again.  J and I went to both of these last year and came home with some reallygood stuff.  Our calendar’s marked for this years market.  J got the following message from a Facebook group.

Every Saturday, Benjamin Davis Park is the place to be for Fresh Food, Fitness, and Fun!

Lansing, MI – June 3, 2009 – For years, residents across South Lansing have wanted a farmers market where they could purchase fresh, locally grown produce. In addition, residents in Southeast Lansing have wanted a safe place to walk and bike in an area that lacks sidewalks on several major roads. Thanks to the South Lansing Community Development Association, both dreams are about to become reality.

What: South Lansing Community Farmers Market

When: Every Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June through September

What: Grand Opening of Paved Path at Benjamin Davis Park

When: Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m.

Where: Benjamin Davis Park, 5614 Pleasant Grove Rd. (between Jolly and Miller)

Join us as we officially open our new market and the new 3/4 mile paved path. Shop at the market, meet local growers, learn about food preservation, try new recipes, stroll along the newly paved walking path and visit with neighbors. Our market is unlike any other because it offers produce from community growers and urban yard gardeners as well as local farmers.

This Saturday, the market will offer early harvest produce, including asparagus, radishes, rhubarb, salad greens, spinach, Swiss chard, and turnip greens, as well as garden starts and potted perennials. We’ll also have a children’s activity table and information on food preservation presented by MSU Extension.

Throughout the season, we’ll offer a growing variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as value-added products like dips and sauces, jams and jellies, honey, maple syrup, baked goods, and soaps.

The market and the path were made possible with support from the Michigan Department of Community Health, the Ingham County Health Department, the Lansing Parks & Recreation Department, MSU Extension, and members of the South Lansing community.

Saturday, February 28th was a big day for J and I.  We delayed our Valentine’s Day celebration by a couple weeks because of a concert in Windsor.  I got J tickets to see Miranda Lambert and in return, she got reservations to Roast in Detroit for me.  When the day finally came, both of us were anxious.  We had been looking forward to this day for so long, it was hard to sit still.  Early in the day, we decided we just needed to leave and go to Detroit even though our reservations weren’t until 6:15.  To kill time, J suggested we check out the Eastern Market.

The Eastern Market is on Russell street.  It’s the oldest public market district in the United States.  Since it’s still winter, things weren’t as crazy as they probably are in the summer.  We got to Detroit just before 4:00.  Since we didn’t really know what was going on, I parked in the first place I found.  During the winter, the market is in Shed 5 which was a two block walk from where we were.  We didn’t know that when we started walking, but I saw signs pointing us that way.  It was cold and windy and it made the walk brutal.  I should have just moved the car, but I didn’t know any better. I’m not sure why, but J has been wanting some squash soup lately.  I needed to make a run to Kroger so I was going to pick up a squash, but for some reason, I remembered that the Holt Farmers’ Market has hours on Thursday so I decided to make two stops and pick up a few things fresh from the farm.

I first visited the Holt Farmer’s Market a few weeks ago.  It’s housed in the old Delhi Township fire house right along Cedar Street.  There’s a nice big parking lot next to it and all of the vendors are inside and out of the elements.  During peak season, there is room to move outside should move vendors sign on.  During the summer, the Market is open Thursday’s from 4-7:30, but today was the last Thursday they are going to be open this year.  From now until December, they are only open on Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm.  Since it was the last Thursday of the year, pickens were slim. A few weeks ago, I wrote a review at the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market (review HERE) and raved about the selection of peppers and fresh herbs.  Jackiecat was quick to point out that a lot of those same ingredients were available at Markets here in town.  She suggested both the Allen Street Farmer’s Market and the Meridian Farmer’s Market. 

I had heard about the Allen Street Farmer’s Market, but haven’t been there yet this summer.  J goes to work at 3:00 and the Market opens at 2:30 so there was really no time for us to go together.  I suppose I could always go by myself, but she eats most of the produce and I’m not very good at picking out what’s good and what’s not.

Since it was recommended I check out, I set down the Wii remote and turned Mario Kart off for a while, jumped in my truck and went shopping.  I found the Allen Street Market on the corner of East Kalamazoo and Allen Streets.  The Farmer’s Market is in a parking lot on the corner.  I saw signs for parking and followed the around the corner to find another parking lot.  It was a pretty tight fit, but I parked then walked over to the tents to see what I could find. We didn’t plan on going to the Farmer’s Market.  In fact, it wasn’t even on the radar when we got out of bed.  I hadn’t even heard of it.  After enjoying lunch at The Black Rose Irish Pub (review HERE), we headed out to the Frederick Meijer Gardens.  We pulled up and thought, “Wow, this looks really cool.”  We got inside thinking there’d be a little bit of an admission charge, but $12?!  To look at flowers?  No thanks.  We passed and got back in the car not knowing what to do now.  I looked at the local attractions section of J’s Garmin GPS and the words “Farmers Market” came up and it was only three miles away.  I hit go and we headed back the other direction to see what kind of Farmer’s Market we were going to find.

The Fulton Street Farmer’s Market is in a parking lot on Fulton Street.  There’s quite a bit of parking around the vendor location and we found a spot right away since we were arriving near the end.  The Farmer’s Market had a pretty cool set up.  There’s a permanent structure that extends the length of about half of the parking lot.  There’s a metal skelton all the way down to hang things from and wooden display counters that are also permanent fixtures. J and I got up earlier than we normally do to once again head to the State Capitol for the Buy Fresh, Buy Local Farmer’s Market.  We went to the event in July and came home with a lot of fresh produce.  We headed downtown today not needing much, but we had such a good time at the last one, we didn’t want to miss this one.

There weren’t quite as many vendors this time, but the ones that were there had a lot more produce.  I noticed in Ann Arbor over the weekend that a lot of farmers were starting to peddle their peppers.  That trend continued today.  There were a lot of peppers including the hard to find purple peppers.  I looked at some habenero’s, but passed because I didn’t have a recipe in mind. 

We looked at apples, but didn’t buy.  J likes to take one to her with work every day so she has something to snack on other than candy, but since we’re planning on being away for the weekend, we passed.  They were a little pricey and we didn’t want to waste them.  Had this been a Monday, I’m positive we would have bought some.

She did end up buying more blueberries and raspberries.  I finished up the last two pints making a mixed berry pie, so we needed some more for salads.  I think she ended up paying around $8 for the two pints.  The raspberries were $5 and the blueberries $3.  Read the rest of this entry »

Buy Fresh Buy Local – Select Michigan Day

I noticed a post about this last week on Good Food Hunting and today I got a comment about it from Ang, so I thought I’d make a post reminding people.  Select Michigan Day on the lawn of the Capitol is this Thursday, September 18. 

We went to this event back in July and walked away with a lot of great stuff.  I’m sure we’ll make another trip downtown now that some of the fall vegetables are starting to come in.

Farmer’s Market’s are something that is relatively new to me.  The last place I lived had only one and it was at a time that wasn’t very convienent.  Since moving to Michigan, I’ve done a lot more shopping this way and love it.  We were in Ann Arbor to do some shopping, but first, we hit up Zingerman’s Deli (review HERE) for lunch.  As we were driving around looking for parking, we passed the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market and realized it was close to the Deli.  After a delicious lunch, we walked down the street to see what the local Ann Arbor farmers had to offer.

The first thing I noticed was the abundance of peppers.  It must be that time of year because every table had a lot of peppers ranging all over the scoville scale.  I looked at some habanero’s and some red peppers, but ultimately passed because I didn’t know how long we were going to be in town or how hot it would get in the car. 

Another big thing for me is fresh herbs.  It’s so hard to find good quality herbs and I’m a terrible gardener.  I killed everything I tried to grow this year after having really good luck with basil last year.  There was one table that had just about every type of herb I could have wanted.  I’m not sure I’ve ever seen spearmint and there was more than one table that had it.  Read the rest of this entry »
