Not in Lansing this time, but still, I was at the South Cedar Street KFC a few weeks ago and they ran out of chicken they had on special. This time, a New York City KFC runs out of grilled chicken after too many people come in with free coupons.
Customers at a New York City KFC hoping to redeem coupons for a free meal were disgruntled when the fast-food restaurant ran out of its new grilled chicken, but Internet rumors of a riot were unfounded, a Kentucky Fried Chicken spokeswoman said Wednesday. “Some customers were upset because they couldn’t get their chicken, but there was no riot,” said Laurie Schalow.
Schalow said the Manhattan restaurant on East 42nd Street plans to begin honoring the coupons again Thursday after it resupplies the kitchen.

Schalow said the grilled chicken has been a huge success, and the combination of a bad economy and Oprah’s popularity created a “perfect storm.”
“We prepared for it,” Schalow said, noting that a KFC restaurant can only serve so many people during the lunch and dinner hours. “We didn’t prepare for this extreme.”
Really?! You’re giving away FREE chicken…hell, a FREE meal and you’re surprised about how many people are coming in? J printed out a couple of the coupons (there’s more than one KFC in the area) and so did her co-workers. They all went for chicken Tuesday night and with a drink, she got more food than she could eat for less than three bucks. I got ten e-mails from friends yesterday with the subject line “Lunch is on me” with a link to the coupon.
I’m surprised it hasn’t happened at more places.
Chicken and Fish Express on Saginaw Street in Lansing.
I had to work downtown early. Well, early for me. 9:00 is still a couple hours before I usually get up, so getting my butt out of bed and downtown isn’t easy. It was a short day with my job finishing up a little after 1:30. I had a few Tim Horton’s doughnuts for breakfast,but that was it, so I was starving. Chicken has been all the rage and a few months ago, someone told me about a chicken place in a Marathon Station. Since it wasn’t too far from downtown, I decided to check it out.
This wasn’t the first time I had stopped in to the Chicken & Fish Express on Saginaw Street. A few weeks ago, I decided to stop, but was really confused and ended up leaving. The store is connected to the Marathon Station, but the businesses aren’t really connected. Sure, there’s a door to move between the two businesses, but it’s blocked from both sides. Chicken & Fish Express has a separate entrance on Pine Street side of the building. When I stopped a couple weeks ago, it didn’t look like the place was open. The door moved when I pushed it, but there was no one inside and I didn’t see anything behind the counter, so I left. Read the rest of this entry »

WASHINGTON — This coming Mother’s Day, make Mom proud. Join thousands of postal carriers and millions of Americans in participating in the nation’s largest, one-day food drive, this Saturday, May 9.
The U.S. Postal Service proudly joins the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and Campbell Soup Company to support the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive, designed for people to help those in need right in their own city or town.
Show Mom some love by donating non-perishable food to help some 35.5 million people, including 12 million children, who face hunger every day in America. The process to donate is simple: Put non-perishable food items in a bag and place it by your mailbox. Your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to local food banks.
“This Stamp Out Hunger drive is a tradition entering its 17th year,” said Postmaster General John E. Potter. “The generosity of our customers has filled food banks and pantries all across the nation. Our employees will further demonstrate their powerful reach into each of their communities and how our assistance helps those in need.”
Letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America will deliver much more than mail when they walk and drive along their postal routes to collect food donations for distribution to community banks and pantries throughout the country. Nearly 1,500 local NALC branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands are involved in the drive.
To promote this year’s drive, the Postal Service’s Priority Mail and Campbell Soup co-sponsored the printing of 130 million postcards encouraging the public’s participation. Public service announcements featuring movie and television stars David Arquette and Courteney Cox, as well as the Harlem Globetrotters, are being made available throughout the country. Valpak Direct Marketing Systems is focusing 40 million of its envelopes on encouraging food donations and Valassis is promoting the drive with 85 million of its mail-delivered Red Plum wraps.
Other co-sponsors of the drive are Feeding America, formerly known as America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s food bank network; the United Way of America and its local United Ways; and the AFL-CIO.
In 2008, NALC members, with the assistance of rural letter carriers, other postal employees and numerous other volunteers, collected 73,113,915 pounds of food for the needy from postal customers. That brought the total for the first 16 years of conducting the drive to nearly one billion pounds of food.

Vito & Nick's II on 183rd Street in Tinley Park.
My brother has recently found South Side Chicago pizza. Last summer, he went to a White Sox game with my aunt and some of her co-workers. Those co-workers stopped at a pizzeria in Matteson where my brother had a cracker thin crust Italian beef pizza for the first time. Since then, he’s talked about it on many occasions.
When J and I can only make it back as far as Chicago, we usually meet my parents for lunch on Sunday before heading back to Michigan. J hasn’t seen my niece since February, so I asked my brother if he wanted to meet for pizza in Tinley Park. Of course, he said yes.
I need to start this off by explaining the lineage of Vito & Nick’s. A few months ago, I reviewed The Original Vito & Nick’s on 84th and Pulaski. Vito & Nick’s II is not part of the original restaurant, but it is an offshoot of that tavern owned by the son of namesake Vito Barraco. That son opened two stores called Vito & Nick’s II which are in no way affiliated with the Original. The Tinley Park location isn’t one of those two. After the original Vito & Nick’s II stores took off, the store started to franchise. The Tinley Park store is one of those franchises. So even though it’s not a direct descendant of the legendary tavern on Chicago’s south side, they do have a pretty similar menu.
They open the store on 183rd near Harlem at noon on Sunday’s. We got there just a little before noon. By the time we got my niece out of her carseat and started walking towards the restaurant, a man was coming out to unlock the door. Messana's Candy Land on 183rd Street in Tinley Park
Since we didn’t have enough time to make a trip to my parents house south of Chicago, I talked them in to meeting us for lunch a little closer to the city. It had been over two months since J got a chance to see my niece, so I sweet talked my dad and brother with pizza. J and I got to the restaurant about 15 minutes before they did and when we pulled in, we noticed a candy shop a couple storefronts down.
Messana’s Candy Land is near the corner of 183rd and Harlem Avenue not far from I-80. The store is in a mixed used building that looks to be pretty new. There are a row of stores on the bottom floor and a few floors of apartments above them.
When we walked in, we didn’t know what kind of candy store we were walking in to. It was just before noon on a Sunday and we were the only ones there. There was a man and a women working behind the counter making popcorn and stocking shelves. I didn’t really have an intention of buying anything, but some of the things were just too good to pass up.
Like most candy stores, they have some throwback candy that were popular when I was a kid. J found something she wanted and since she was grabbing some candy, I decided to pick up a package of Fun Dip. They were reasonably priced at $1.15 and who doesn’t like raw sugar? TGI Friday's on 95th Street in Oak Lawn.
After seeing the best basic cable clip show host perform at The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, IN, we needed food. It was a little after 10:00 by the time we left the casino and even though we were only 15 miles or so from home, taking surface streets in Chicago can take a really long time. The neighborhood we were driving through really wasn’t a neighborhood we were wanting to stop in, so we all started talking about places to eat back in an area where J’s parents were more familiar with the options. There were, of course, the two 24 hour family restaurants, but I think everyone was wanting something more than classic diner food. J tried calling a couple chains to see how late they were open and didn’t have any luck until she called TGI Friday’s.
The Oak Lawn TGI Friday’s is on 95th Street in downtown Oak Lawn. A few years ago, you would have only found houses were the building stands, but the Village board had a different vision for the area. They made the area a TIF district and used emminent domain to get rid of the houses. Now, a bank and Friday’s share a parking lot along the very busy commercial artery of Oak Lawn.
By the time we made it back to 95th Street, it was about twenty after eleven. J was told on the phone they stopped taking orders at 11:45 so we actually made it with plenty of time to spare. The entrance to the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond.
I know it looks like I have a gambling problem, but really, I never spend much. Maybe twenty bucks tops. We just seem to be having a lot of luck lately at finding shows we want to see at casinos.
Back in March, I stopped at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond to pick up four tickets to see Joel McHale. J and I watch The Soup every Friday night and really like McHale’s comedy, so I thought this would be a great birthday present. J’s mom is also a fan, so I picked up two more tickets for her and J’s step dad.
The Venue is on the second floor of the Horseshoe Casino which sits near I-90 on Indianapolis Boulevard in Hammond. There’s a large parking structure as you come upon the complex and the elevator takes you back down to the first floor where you enter the casino.
The gaming floor is huge. It’s not as big as Soaring Eagle, but it’s much bigger than the riverboat casino’s in the area. It’s a large, open area with a high ceiling. You have to go all the way to the back of the gaming floor to find the escalators that lead up to The Venue. Read the rest of this entry »
