LeRoy's Classic Bar & Grill on South Cedar Street in Lansing.

You know how there’s always a place you drive by but never stop at?  LeRoy’s was that place for us.  In fact, we drive by it so much, J actually thought we had eaten there before.  It just seemed familiar because we take that route to downtown Lansing quite often, but it’s a place we had neglected.  There wasn’t a reason we never stopped.  I just never thought of it when it came to dinner time.

J and I left downtown after spending the afternoon at Oldsmobile Park.  By the time we hopped back in the car, I was really hungry and wanted something really greasy.  I heard somewhere that LeRoy’s had a pretty good burger and it was on the way home, so we finally stopped neglecting the little neighborhood bar.

LeRoy’s Classic Bar & Grill is on South Cedar Street at Baker.  There’s a parking lot on the north side of the building and behind the building.  It was still pretty early on a Saturday night, so parked in the lot on the north and entered through the front door which opens out to Cedar Street.

We didn’t make it to far past the bar once we got inside.  It took my eyes a second to adjust as it was pretty dark.  There are a couple booths along the wall just inside the door and I suggested we grab one of those so we’d be noticed by the bartender.

There was only one menu on the table, but since no one was sitting in the booth behind us, I reached back and grabbed the one off that table so we didn’t have to share.  The bartender noticed us right away and came over for drink orders.  We were both a little dehydrated from sitting outside all day, so we stuck with soft drinks.

When it came time for food, it was pretty obvious what we were both getting.  I knew when I looked at the menu what J was going to order and she knew right away what I was looking at.  We’re pretty predictable.

I ordered the double burger which comes with ketchup, mustard, pickle, and onion.  I asked for all of that to be left off and for cheese to be added.  The sandwich is served on a toasted bun and I added an order of fries to complete the meal.  The burgers at LeRoy’s are quarter pound fresh ground beef patties, so the double burger is a half pound of meat.  The sandwich is stacked pretty high and it was a juicy, delicious piece of meat.  I was looking for something greasy and this burger was perfect.  The fries were fresh cut and fried to a perfect golden brown.  The meal I had at LeRoy’s was exactly the meal I was looking for.  Everything was fantastic.

J ordered the chicken strip basket.  She got seven large pieces of chicken with fries and sauce.  It was actually too much chicken and she gave me a couple pieces.  They weren’t fresh made, but still delicious and exactly what she was looking for.  The fries were cooked the way she liked them and she passed off her chicken to me so she’d have more room for the fries.

Our bill was just over sixteen bucks which was a surprise to both of us.  Neither of us could believe how great of a meal we got for that price.  LeRoy’s isn’t much more than a neighborhood bar, but it’s a neighborhood bar with good people and great food.  At one point, the bartender was tending bar, waitressing, and doing the cooking yet we were never neglected and our food was brought out to us pretty quickly.  LeRoy’s is one of those under rated places in the community.  It was a place we drove by on many occasions not knowing what was hiding behind the old brick facade.
