The Draft House Neighboorhood Bar & Grill on Old US 27 outside of Dewitt

How many times have I said all restaurants need a website?  I know I keep harping on it, but again, we picked The Draft House for lunch just becuase I found a website and it looked cool.  We were out in Clinton Country because we wanted to go check out Uncle John’s Cider Mill, but first, we needed lunch.  I looked for places in St. John’s and didn’t find a whole lot.  My Google search then led me to Dewitt.  I found a few places there, but The Draft House looked cool and looked like our kind of place so that’s where we went.

We had a hard time finding the place at first because the GPS wouldn’t recognize the address they way it was written on Google.  We instead hit “City Center” and started driving hoping we’d find it.  There’s no way we would have had we continued on that path, but when we got to an intersection marked “Old US 27” we tried putting that in the GPS and we finally got the address right.

The Draft House is on Old US 27 outside of DeWitt.  There’s a huge sign out front, but the building itself is pretty non-descript.  There were a few cars in the parking lot, but we were pretty early.  The football games had just started so the bar wasn’t completely empty.  Things started looking good when we opened the door to go in.  Hanging next to the door is a sign proclaiming The Draft House is smoke free!  YAY!

The dining room and bar are in the same room.  There are booths along the outside wall and quite a few tables to fill the space in between.  The interior is dark with lots of exposed, distressed beams.  It’s kind of got the feel of that old world craftsmanship.  We took a seat in one of the booths where I could watch the Illinois vs. Minnesota game, but still keep my eye on the Michigan vs. Toledo game.  A waitress came over with menus and took our order for a Coke and a Diet Coke.  By the time she got back, we were ready to order.

J ordered the Honey Mustard Chicken sandwich.  The grilled chicken was topped with Cajun spices and Swiss cheese.  It was served on a herbed foccacia bun with a homemade honey mustard sauce on the side.  The sandwich came with just coleslaw so she added a side order of Brew City Fries.  She loved her sandwich.  I usually think of foccacia bread as being hard, but this bread was so soft and the combination of the blackening spice and honey mustard was perfect. The fries were beer battered and fried to a crispy golden brown.  They were perfect for both of us.  I don’t think they were anything other than the out of the bag variety, but the battering made them stand out.

I was very, very tempted to try an Ostrich Burger, but I wasn’t feeling super brave and settled on a plain ol’ cheeseburger with Cheddar cheese.  You get the choice of a 1/2 lb or a 1/4 lb.  The menu price is for the half pounder.  Since we were probably going to indulge in fudge and other goodies later, I ordered the quarter pounder.  The hamburger was nice and juicy and just enough to satisfy me with a side of fries which came with my sandwich.

Our waitress was always right on top of things and had refills on our drinks ready before we needed them.  She was really good about watching our progress and coming back to bus plates and drop of the check at just the right time.  Our check was just under $20 before tip.

The Draft House is a really neat bar with really good bar food.  Had I not Googled restaurants in the St. Johns/DeWitt area, we probably never would have found it, but I’m really glad we did.  It’s a little bit off the highway and I’m not sure why we would ever be out in that area, but if we are, it’s nice to know there’s a great bar we can stop in for lunch

We love the Draft House so I am glad you found it. On Tuesday nights they have Taco night, it is hard to get a seat, but the tacos are worth it. Also at dinner, their Cajun Chicken Alfredo is the best!

The location of the Draft House is DeWitt, not Dewitt.
