After twelve hours, I finally got to welcome my niece into this world.  Needless to say, after twelve hours, my sister-in-law was exhausted and hungry.  Her first meal post delivery was Wendy’s, but the next day, she wanted something deep fried.  I went back to the hospital hoping I could hold her again, but she was put under the blue lights due to the jaundice, so instead, I just got to hang out with my brother and sister-in-law.

About 3:00, the new mom decided she was hungry, but the hospital kitchen stopped serving.  No bid deal.  LIke I said, she was really in the mood for deep fried anyway.  When she worked at a flower shop on Kankakee’s southside, Poor Boy Restaurant was a frequent stop for lunch.

Poor Boy is on Court Street near Interstate 57.  It’s not really in a great part of town, so I have a hard time convincing my relatives to stop there for lunch, but my sister-in-law is fearless when it comes to good food.  The menu at Poor Boys is all over the place.  They have ribs.  They have burgers.  They have Italian Beefs.  You got your pick of any greasy food you want.

There was only one guy working both the counter and the drive thru so service was a little slow.  There were two guys in front of us in line and the clerk was going back and forth between the counter and the drive thru.  That gave me a few minutes to figure out the menu and get what my brother’s wife wanted.  After a few minutes, the clerk finally got to me at the counter.

I wasn’t ordering for myself…just the new mom.  She wanted the Buffalo Chicken Bite dinner with BBQ sauce and mashed potatoes instead of fries.  I surprisingly ordered it right.  Yay for me!  Once the order was put in, it only took a few seconds to put it together.  I grabbed the to go box and headed out doing only about six bucks in damage.

Poor Boys is a great take out place.  There are some tables inside, but really not an inviting place to eat with the family.  I’ve eaten at Poor Boys in the past and I’ve never had a bad meal.  My sister-in-law was very appreciative not to eat another cafeteria food and it made the whole room smell delicious.

My mom use to take me here often as I was growing up I eventually moved away and have just came back after 17 years to Chicago hopefully I get back there soon it was a great childhood memory and if the food is as good as the memories it will be worth the drive.
