A few weeks ago when I originally posted about Kroger in Holt (review HERE), a commentor suggested I check out the Kroger on Saginaw and Creyts Rd.  I figured a Kroger is a Kroger, right?  Boy, I was wrong.

My girlfriend had me running some errands while she was getting her hair cut.  I tried to do pick up everything I needed at Meijer, but was one thing short.  I thought I was just going to go to Wal-Mart, but as I drove by Kroger, I remembered the comment and decided to stop.  My plan wasn’t to get anything food releated.  I was actually looking for a skin care product, but I wanted to check it out.  Let me tell you.  This is like no Kroger I’ve ever been in before.

When you first walk, you walk into the produce section.  No surprise there.  That’s how pretty much all grocery stores are set up.  The produced section was actually kind of small, but as you keep walking, you hit a lot of interesting things.  The first is a take and bake pizza counter.  Never seen that before.  Keep walking a little bit farther, around the olive bar (again, something I’ve never really seen at a Kroger), and you run into the Sushi bar.  Yes, you read that right.  Fresh sushi actually being prepared by Sushi chefs right in the middle of a Kroger.

Around the corner from that you start to get into the meat department, but the first few aisles in the genearl merchandise area are a huge kitchenware section.  Kroger usually has these items at the end of the baking aisle, but here, they have their own aisles (plural).

The rest of the grocery part of the store is pretty standard, but it’s much cleaner looking than most Kroger’s.  It just looks and feels new.  I got through the grocery section to get where I was going and surprisingly found what I was looking for.  I started to head up front and ran into something else I’ve never seen in a Kroger.

There was a huge books and magazine section in the front of the store.  I’ve seen some stores with a smaller version of this, but this was huge.   Right next to that was a huge liquor area and they had rows and rows of wines along with wine books, magazines, and accessories.  Just the wine section was three times what most liquor sections are and there is still beer and hard liquor near the back of this section.

I hit the self-checkout and got out of there quickly before I changed my mind and started buying everything.  I was impressed.  For a chain grocery store, this Kroger had a lot of really neat features.  I’m not sure if I’ll be back to shop or not only because of the location.  Usually we hit Horrocks and Wal-Mart when we’re out there only because Wal-Mart has one item that we can’t find anywhere else.

Glad you liked it. I don’t get to go there much, but if I’m in the neighborhood (like grabbing a burger at Red Robin), I always stop in.
