Cheddars coming to Saginaw Hwy?

26 06 2008

I was hanging out near Lansing Cheddar\'sMall today and noticed some work going on at the corner of Saginaw and Mall Dr.  The outside looked familar, but I couldn’t quite figure it out.  I drove up a little closer and saw the signs for Cheddar’s which, according to their website, will be the first is the only Cheddar’s in Michigan.  Cheddar’s is a growing chain founded in 1978 in Arlington, TX.  I’ve eaten at a couple of their other stores.  It’s good food, but it’s still a chain.  There isn’t a whole lot that is different from, say, Applebees.  For those of you that like the chains, this is something to get excited about.  It is a small enough chain that you’re not going to be able to find one in every city, so treat yourself sometime.

Update – Apparently not a new Cheddar’s but a remodel maybe?  Corky pointed out in comments that there had been a Cheddar’s at this location before.  The signs are all covered and there’s a lot of work going on?  Does anyone for sure if they’re remodeling or maybe a new tenant moving in?

They might be remodeling. I ate there a few years ago and as you have already assessed, it was your typical franchise-quality food. That particular Cheddar’s *had* been open for several years. Amy and I drove by a week or so ago and we noticed that it had been shuttered.

You have any idea where the Sonic(s) will be opening in Lansing? I love the drive-in eateries. Have you ever tried the Nip-N-Sip drive-in in N. Lansing?

Thanks for the clarification. I never noticed it, but I never notice places like that.

I’ve heard one of the Sonic’s will be on Lake Lansing Rd near the Eastwood Town Centre. Don’t know about the other one. We have not been to Nip-N-Sip yet. One of the places that’s on my list. There’s just so many restaurants I want to eat at, it’s hard to get everywhere without totally breaking the bank.

Its a remodel. I read (in LSJ I think or maybe City Pulse) that the corporate office took the restaurant over to update the look to match the style of the other locations. Its been here for a long time, 15 years or so.

Makes sense. Thanks for the updates!

courtney is somewhat correct, corporate office took this restaurant over from a former franchisee and remodeled it before reopening, and as a correction to prior comments cheddars is not a typical franchise or chain restaurant as you called it, most are corporately owned with a few franchisees, and one of the original founders still calls the shots 🙂 the food is awesome and great value for money

sorry, I disagree. The food is the same bland stuff you get at Applebees, Ruby Tuesday, Bennigans, etc. There’s no way possible that you can run a restaurant chain without centralizing production. The food is exactly the same no matter where you go and the only way to do that is to use packaged or frozen ingredients. The food is no different than any other national chain. Some people like that. My brother is one of them. He won’t eat at a local joint unless I drag him there kicking and screaming. He prefers the safety of the chains. I don’t. It’s just an opinion.

Thank you for the clarification on our local restaurant here in Lansing. (That comment was posted from Houston…coincidence that Cheddar’s HQ is in Arlington?)

I used to work at cheddars, and you will be surprised that is it NOT the same as other restaurants. The cooks come in 3 hours before open to FRESHLY prepare food, most of which all made from scratch. It has excellent food, and most of all en excellent group of employees working there. I worked there all the way up until the re-model, and plan on going back. And yes… everyone is correct about the corporate office taking it over, but that is only going to make it better.
