It’s not hard to find sweets on Mackinac Island.  If you’re like me, the hard thing is choosing which one to try.  Everything looks good.  My biggest fear was that I would pick the wrong one.  Since we were only spending one day on the Island, I wanted to make sure everything we did would be a good experience.

After walking around for a few hours, J wanted to get something to cool down.  It was hotter than we expected and the sun was out while we were expecting rain.  We may have over dressed a little which made us a little warm.

We walked down Main Street a few times and nothing jumped out right away.  I finally suggested we cross the street and right away, we ran into a little mall that had air conditioning.  The first store in that mall area was an ice cream shop.  Since we were there, I pushed J towards the door so we could sit down and enjoy something cold.

Martha’s Sweet Shop is on Main on Mackinac Island.  It’s in the downtown area even though Google maps is showing it out by the airport.  There are two entrances.  One is off the road.  The other is off the little mall area that connects to a few other shops.

The space is long and narrow.  There’s just enough room for a few tables along the wall and a few more in a space farther back in the store.  We stopped in for ice cream, but they also have a variety of baked goods and even some sub sandwiches if you’re looking for lunch.

The ice cream is set up in traditional ice cream shop fashion.  There’s a cooler with all the flavors and signs telling us what each one is.  J opted for a waffle cone with a scoop of berry ice cream.  There was a cotton candy flavor that she noticed after she ordered, but stuck with her original and was very happy with it.  She likes waffle cones and was more than happy to get a scoop of ice cream.

I, for some reason that I don’t really know, have never been a cone person.  I don’t like licking ice cream.  I don’t know if they had cups or not.  I just ordered a vanilla shake.  Real adventurous, huh?  They only had one size which was a 16oz.  That was fine with me.  It was enough.  I wasn’t really impressed with the ice cream.  Yes, I know it was just a vanilla shake and not something adventurous or complicated, but the shake had no flavor at all.  It just tasted like I was sucking cold up the straw. It didn’t really do much for me.

The cost for the two treats was a little over seven bucks.  Wasn’t much and not marked up as much as I thought it would be.  As far as the ice cream goes, I think I sort of missed the spot on this one…at least with my selection.  J liked hers and she was the one that was really in the mood for the ice cream.  I was happy to oblige, but I didn’t get much out of my selection.
