I am enjoying your blog. It looks like we both live on the south side of town. My current quest is to find deep-fried breaded scallops for my boyfriend. I haven’t tried a “you buy-we fry place” but I am about to! If you have come across any in your travels, please drop me a line!

I’ll keep my eye out, but unfortunately, I really don’t like Seafood. Thanks for commenting…I found your blog too and have it bookmarked…already found a few places on there I haven’t eaten at…anything to give me some new ideas.

Hey, love your blog. I will be linking up to it in my “Welcome to East Lansing!” section of my blog (www.enlightenedspartan.com). By the way, can you link me up on your Blogroll?

Also, when you get a chance… try out The Peanut Barrel. It’s a burger spot.

I, too, enjoy your blog and have pretty much found myself in agreement on your opinions.
Will have to give the Long Branch a try on our next trip to Mattoon.
I think I remember seeing it as we drove through metropolitan Clifton last year looking for a place to eat but didn’t stop in.
Moved from to Lansing about 35 years ago but visit in-laws in central Illinois a couple of times a year.

I’ll suggest you try my favorite area restaurant: Cuginos in downtown Grand Ledge.
Burgers aren’t the best, but great small town atmosphere and I like the subs.
Same family that runs Deluca’s so you know they know Italian.
Try it around 6p any night of the week and you’ll end up waiting for a seat.

Cugion’s is another place we’ve been wanting to get to. Thanks for the suggestion.

On your restaurant links page, Okemos is spelled wrong.
Not a complaint, just an observation.
Was reading through some of our Peoria reviews.
The restaurant business must have tanked when you moved.

14 10 2008
Mid-Michigan Dining

Thanks for pointing that out. Can’t believe I didn’t notice that.

Peoria was a funny town. There are a lot of chains, but if you know where to look, there were some really great restaurants.

Glad to see you found the Bloated Goat.
Been meaning to mention it and never got around to it.
Next time you’re in Williamston, you might want to give Brookshire a try.
Bar/Restaurant/Golf course.
North on Putam from the light and turn left at first stop.
And if J likes nice gift shops, there’s one hidden about a 1/2 block north of the Grand River light as you go up Putnam at High Street.
Set back a ways and not easy to spot.
Spotted Rabbit or some such name — has rabbit in it.
Just a nice small town gift shop.
Have you hit Tomato Brothers in Howell yet?
Italian with a name like that, of course. But also ribs etc. too.
Usually VERY busy.
On the right at intersection of Grand River Ave. and M59 — about 3/4 mile north of Tangier.

I have enjoyed reading your reviews on downtown Chicago, we are heading there next weekend, what is your favorite pizza place? Or anything else not to miss! Thanks
Angie

Mid-Michigan Dining

My favorite pizza place downtown is Giordano’s. There all over Chicago, but the one downtown is 730 N. Rush St which is near Michigan Avenue.

http://www.giordanos.com/

If you don’t mind traveling to the south suburbs, the absolute best pizza in Chicagoland is Palermo’s on 95th in Oak Lawn…it’s just a few miles south of Midway Airport. There are a lot of places that say they’re Palermo’s, but there’s only one, so if you’re not in Oak Lawn, it’s not the right one. Palermo’s isn’t really “Chicago-Style” pizza, but it’s the best pizza in town.

http://www.palermos95th.com/

Other options are Pizzeria Uno (29 E. Ohio) and Pizzeria Due (619 N. Wabash), both downtown.

I’ve never eaten there, but I’ve heard a lot about Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Co. in Lincoln Park (2121 N. Clark)

http://www.chicagopizzaandovengrinder.com/

You can never go wrong with Lou Malnati’s (multiple locations), Gino’s East (multiple locations) and Connie’s Pizza.

I would highly recommend both Weber Grill and The Billy Goat Tavern which you just read reviews for.

If you want BBQ in the city, there’s a place called Smoque (3800 N. Pulaski). It’s north of downtown, but worth the trip.

http://www.smoquebbq.com/

I always make a stop at one of Portillo’s many Chicagoland restaurants. There’s one downtown on Ontario (100 W. Ontario). There are also a lot of restaurants in that area.

Looking for a real fancy night out? I’ve had good luck at Petterino’s (150 N. Dearborn…in the theater districts…lots of nice restaurants in this area).

http://www.petterinos.com/

A good steakhouse? Morton’s Downtown Steakhouse right on the river. (65 E. Wacker Pl).

http://www.mortons.com/

I’ve never been here either, but I’ve heard a lot about it and it’s a great place for bachelorette parties…Dick’s Last Resort…also right on the Chicago River (435 E. Illinois)

http://www.dickslastresort.com/

Like Deuling Piano’s? Howl at the Moon (26 W. Hubbard St.)

http://www.howlatthemoon.com/

That should be a good start…if you’re looking for something else, let me know!

Thank so much! This will be a great help! We are staying on Rush St. so Giordano’s will be the closest and that is the place everyone reccomends, and since you did, I trust you. I will let you know what we think

Have you ever tried the Italian Beef sandwich at Fazoli’s on Cedar?

7 12 2008
Mid-Michigan Dining

Not since moving to Lansing. I’ve eaten at Fazoli’s before and if I remember right, Fazoli puts red sauce on their Italian beef which is definitely not a Chicago style…I’ll check it out one day and see if it’s what I remember.

Just discovered your site and have read almost all the reviews. It’s pretty clear you love your burgers and J seems to mostly go with salads or sandwiches made with chicken or turkey, often buffalo chicken. My faves are pizza, Mexican, Chinese. Looking forward to your review of Grumpy’s Diner at Pennsyvania and Mt. Hope. I plan to try it soon.

Wish there was an easier way to find your rreviews such as an alphabetical index. I couldn’t find any drop down menu other than for the archives by month.

Thanks for reading! I agree, I’ve been trying to find a way to put a page together with all the reviews so you could find what you’re looking for, but I think Ihave to code it by hand, so I haven’t gotten that far yet. WordPress doesn’t have a widget that makes it easy..that I’m aware of. It’s something I’ve thought about myself and wanted to do, but haven’t had time to really sit down and do it

Not sure if you saw it the last time you were to Horrock’s, but there is a new restaurant called the Embassy Grill in the same plaza as GoWorkout! on Saginaw…Sign says Italian and Lebanese food…Think it was the old Carmelo’s, the restaurant that had the gangster out front waving the sign…

Ice Cream Joe’s on Saginaw is now under another name too…

20 02 2009
Ang

Corky is correct. The Embassy Grill is where Carmelo’s is, I heard it is still owned by the same people they just changed the name and added Lebanese food. Ice Cream Joe’s is The Udder Creamery, I believe. Also another interesting place, we went to R-Club on Crytes Rd, near St. Joe and 496, it was GREAT! Another west-side location to check out!

If you want to beat Guy to a nearby DDD spot, you might want to head up to Birch Run to Tony’s.
The ONE POUND BLT is pretty good by the way.
As you can see from the photos in the story, everything at Tony’s is somewhat large.

Wow…thanks for the link. Tony’s was on our list…we almost stopped last year when we went to Frankenmuth, but I didn’t know if it was something my parents would like. It’s definitely getting bumped up to a higher priority now.

I’d been thinking of writing a blog similar to what you’ve created here, I’m really impressed with how many places you’ve managed to get to so far. Kudos!

Just need to get you out to try some Asian places in town. Surprisingly Lansing actually has a few really good Asian spots around town. Sansu comes to mind (off of Hagadorn by campus). Interesting thing there is that they also own & operate a european/asian style bakery [Chapelure] in a different part of the strip mall which is fantastic and unexpected.

Can also see you have a love for good pizza which is hard to find here. My general “go to” place is Leo’s Outpost. Generally good, though sometimes a bit heavy on Salt. On Sunday Leo’s offer a buy one, get second pizza 1/2 off. Franks Press Box on the west side does a pretty good pizza too.

Welcome to Michigan! If you ever want a recommendation on places to try out feel free to ask. I’ve lived in the Detroit area, Ann Arbor, and Lansing. Tagged ya on Facebook and look forward to your future explorations.

10 05 2009
Mid-Michigan Dining

Thanks!

I really don’t like Asian food at all. I’ve tried a couple times and it just isn’t my thing. I grew up in a town of 700 people in Central Illinois…I had never seen an Asian restaurant until I moved to Peoria when I was 23, so it’s not something I have ever been around. I had a friend from San Diego who tried more than once to get me to eat Asian with him and I never could stomach it. I’m definitely a meat and potatoes guys.

Never tried the pizza at Leo’s. I like their burgers so much I’ve never tried anything else. I’ll remember that next time we go there. Thanks for the recommendation!

Dan,

To be honest I’ve never googled my own business and was pleased to find some well articulated favorable reviews, yours being one of them. In constructing our website, my brother was the one that called me to let me know of our following. If you ever need any info from me for your site or your food here just ain’t right, let me know. After 25 years in this racket, it’s still fun and I’m still learning.

A couple spots you should check out in Okemos, which I’m becoming more familiar with now that I work on that side of town.

Scalawags – It’s a Michigan owned Fish & chips business. My experience is that it’s the best in the area though their tartar sauce is kinda bleh. They do have Malt Vinegar if that’s your thing.
http://www.scalawagswhitefish.com/

Guido’s Pizza – Offering up Detroit style Pizza (think Buddy’s). Only been there once so far and it’s very promising. Guido’s also has gluten free options on the menu which is mostly non-existent in Italian-style eateries.
http://www.guidospizza.com/

28 05 2009
Mid-Michigan Dining

Don’t like fish.

We’ve eaten at Guido’s….really liked it. It’s too bad it’s so far from home…they had a great thin crust pizza.

Is Buddy’s something we should check out in Detroit?

31 05 2009
Bernie B

Buddy’s in Detroit is a pizza chain that continually wins awards for their deep dish. They use a risen dough in the pan, cheese, then toppings. Sauce goes above the toppings. It’s pretty unique and what I consider to be “Detroit-Style Pizza”.

I’d worked there making Pizza’s back in the late 80’s before going to college.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit-style_pizza

Buddy’s Detroit-style square pizza was singled out as one of the 25 best pizzas in America by GQ magazine food critic, Alan Richman

31 05 2009
Bernie B

One of the other iconic Pizza places in the Detroit area is Pizzapapalis which serves up Chicago Deep-Dish. I’d only been to the one in Greek Town and it was really good, though always a long wait. Somewhat to be expected for that kind of ‘Za.

http://www.pizzapapalis.com/

1 06 2009
Mid-Michigan Dining

When I first read your first comment, I thought to myself, that sounds like Malnati’s (Chicago) pizza. Chicago style is toppings first, then cheese, then sauce…..the fat heavy dough is put in the pan then pulled up the sides….Then I got to the square part…and then I went to Buddy’s website and now I’m really sold. My family is coming to visit in July and we’re going to a Tigers game. I was going to take them to eat at Pizza Papalis in Greektown, but I think I just changed my mind. Buddy’s looks like my kind of place!

I’ve eaten at Pizza Papalis in Southfield. It was really good. What they do is the Chicago Style stuffed pizza like Giordano’s made famous. Pizza Papalis is the best pizza like that I’ve had outside of Chicago.

Here’s a spot you won’t hear anything about on the food blogs. A little spot a ways NW of Claire, MI. Many a summer I worked at the Boy Scout Camp nearby, and BJ’s was the closest watering hole for us adult types.

The good news is that they serve up a really damn good pizza, and the drinks are pretty cheap for being in the boonies. This place is truly a dive with a ton of charm and can’t recommend it highly enough. If you happen to find yourself heading up 115 towards Cadillac look for BJ’s on the side of the road. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it .

Coming from an ‘expert’ and a knowledgeable businessman, your reply to MMD’s review and opinion is very disappointing. In the food service business, it’s just as important to have quality food as it is to have a professional attitude. Your reply to MMD is condescending and filled with poor attitude. MMD’s blog is HIS opinion, he doesn’t need to be an ‘expert.’ MMD simply compared your pizza to other pizza’s and yours was greasier than most others. Perhaps a better response would have been to reply “Dolly’s Pizza is disappointed to here about your recent experience. Dolly’s Pizza values every customer and we aim to please. The next time you are in the area, please stop in and ask for Robert Lewis and I will personally make sure that you are satisfied.”

Quite honestly, you might have the best pizza in Lansing, but I will avoid your establishment because of your attitude…You’re a Dick!

25 11 2009
Robert Lewis

I read your review about the Dolly’s Pizza in Lansing and your comment on our quality of cheese. I immediately realized that your experience is very limited and cannot qualify as an expert opinion. Dolly’s Pizza strives to use the finest meats, cheeses and ingredients money can buy.

25 11 2009
SW Michigan Dining

I never claimed to be an expert……I just know the top of my pizza was greasy and 9.5 time out of 10, that’s caused by cheap cheese seperating during the cooking process.

I have some news regarding Izzo’s Pizza to share. They will be re-opening in downtown Lansing in the former location of Menna’s Joint sometime in January. It will not be called Izzo’s as that was the name that they inherited from the former location in REO Town, it will reopen as Geno’s (I think) after the owner. This is straight from one of his cooks who happened to come into my repair shop for service (yo, Mario!).

This is good news for all of us that were craving New York style pizza.

An added important area is that if you are a senior, travel insurance pertaining

The older you are, the harder at risk you happen to be for getting something undesirable happen to you while

Ok…soo I’m searching the whole of West Michigan (Michigan) foodie critics. Trying to find a few who will brave and not know (impartial is key) owners of the new “hyped up” restaurant in the town I live in. I find you first.

First my opinion…they don’t know what they are doing. They hyped up social media marketing, they took over 2 years to open, and they’ve never ran a restaurant before.

Second it is from insider info that they are trying to get a “five star” appearance in a 2 star town, they are over paying for inexperienced, people have gotten food poisoning already (only been open 2-4 weeks), they claim outside seating as all seating options, they daily have 20 employees, run very limited hours.

That all said I feel this restaurant needs a GENUINE take on what they market versus what they provide; farm-to-table vs frozen food, fresh food vs exported, high quality vs real quality, social media marketing vs reality.

If you decide to give them a go it’s

Farewell Campaign for Biggby

Biggby Store 1 is excited to announce its move across the street to a new building.

Biggby has occupied its current location on Grand River for the past 24 years, happily serving East Lansing residents and MSU students. Store 1 has been a place of growth for members of the community for nearly a quarter of a century and the building houses many memories for its patrons. The last day that the Original Biggby will be in it’s current location is Friday December 20.

To preserve these memories, Biggby Store 1 is asking its customers and former employees to share what Biggby means to them, and any memories they may have from the Grand River location. Whether you met your significant other, studied for finals, or worked here while attending MSU or LCC, Biggby Store 1 wants to hear your memories. Until the big move, Store 1 will have paper out for its community members to write in about their memories that will be bound and taken to its new location.

Biggby is also having a photo contest for pictures of the Store 1 building from December 10th through December 14th. Details of this contest can be found on the Store 1 Facebook page (Biggby Coffee 517 – Grand River Ave).

Biggby Store 1 is excited to start a new chapter and continue sharing its love of coffee with East Lansing for another 24 years, and wants the memories of its previous chapter to be remembered and appreciated.

Store 1 thanks all of its customers for being the best in Biggby Nation. Biggby is excited to share its new home on Grand River with everyone.

For more information on the move visit Store 1 and ask an employee or call 517-337-6480.

Summary

Biggby Store 1 is moving across the street to a new location. To celebrate the memories created in the location that housed the store for 24 years, Biggby is asking customers and former employees to share their memories in a book that will be available at Store 1 until the move. Customers can also share their pictures of the old building in a photo contest lasting from December 10th through December 14th. The Biggby on Grand River is thankful to have amazing customers and will bring old memories to its new location in a bound book and framed picture that won the contest.
