The Target store on Edgewood Boulevard in South Lansing

Target?!  A grocery store?!  I know, I thought the same thing, but recently, I find myself drifting over towards the grocery section everytime I end up in Target.  Like Wal-Mart and K-Mart, Target has taken on the role of a hyper-market with their Super Target stores.  However, none in the Lansing area fall into this category.  They’re all just Target stores.

The grocery section isn’t very big and takes up just a few aisles in the store.  Being small, they don’t have a wide variety.  They carry all the staples and they carry brand names, but they don’t often offer more than one brand of the same product.  In reality, you could do all of your grocery shopping at a Target store.  It may not be the most cost effective, but you don’t have to deal with the mile long aisles of Meijer or Wal-Mart.

The things I usually pick up at Target are things I wouldn’t necissarily think about buying from there.  The last two times I actually picked up cheaper bottles of extra virgin olive oil.  I don’t usually buy the $50 bottles of finishing oil…in fact, I never buy a bottle over $10.  I know it tastes better, but not in the applications I use it for.  I’ve gotten bottles of Bertolli for $5 or $6 which is cheaper than I’ve gotten them at Kroger or Meijer.

We also seem to have good luck with 100 Calorie snack packs.  For the most part, this is a purchase we usually make at Wal-Mart due to their variety when compared to the other supermarkets, but Target has a pretty good selection too and it’s much closer than Wal-Mart.

There’s a decent size frozen food section that includes milk, eggs, pizzas, and other frozen dinners.  I’ve never bought anything out of the freezer, but like the rest of the store, they end up having most everything you would want, just not a variety of brands.

The surprising thing to me is the wine section.  There are two aisles dedicated to it.  I don’t drink wine and wouldn’t know a good one from a bad one, so I have no idea if what’s offered is any good, but I think it’s pretty impressive they have such a huge collection of bottles in a Target.

Target’s not my first stop for grocery, but it’s becoming more of an option.  I like Target’s general merchandise and clothing, so I shop there more that stuff than I would Wal-Mart or Target.  Having the grocery option makes my life easier.  I don’t have to get lost in a Mega-Mart when I just need one or two things and I can get quality stuff from the GM sections of the store as well.

P.S. A Target in Oak Lawn, IL is where I finally found Mario Kart Wii.  I haven’t stopped playing it since we found it :)
